Artifact #1: Reconciliation in the LLC Presentation

Module : 1 Artifact: Reconciliation Powtoon

1.)  Explain how this artifact shows growth towards becoming a TL:

This assignment was one of my first projects in this course and I was feeling a bit intimidated with the idea of presenting a Ted Talk, so I thought that I would do a Powtoon instead with a cartoon presenter. I didn’t know how to use the site, but I thought that it would be a good learning opportunity to present new information in a different format and begin to take on the mantra of a “future ready librarian”, ready to “be at the leading edge of the digital transformation of learning”, as stated on the Futureready.org website. This project also allowed me to more fully explore the role of Teacher Librarians in ensuring that Aboriginal perspectives are well-represented within the LLC and, that everything from the selection of resources to the choice of guest speakers, can have an impact on implementing reconciliation in the LLC and the school as a whole.

2.)  Describe the progression of creating this artifact (attach drafts, feedback, and final project):

After thoroughly reviewing the Leading Learning document, I decided to pursue research into the question, “How can an understanding and respect for the diversity of Canadian culture and Aboriginal people’s heritage be reflected to build a positive climate for the school Library Learning Commons community and encourage contributions from all?” (29). It was through further readings that I discovered that lumping Canadian culture with Aboriginal People’s heritage is, in fact, not appropriate; thus, I chose to focus on one aspect of how to develop understanding and respect for Aboriginal People’s culture and what this might look like in the LLC. I worked hard to identify appropriate sources for this project, looking to the Queen’s database, FNESC, and looking also to libraries such as the Xwi7xwa Library at UBC for inspiration. I tried to summarize my readings, then went through those summaries to identify the key aspects that could be integrated into an elementary LLC.
After identifying these key aspects, I went onto draft those ideas into Powtoon slides. When doing this, I realized that I had a very tight time frame with the free version (with a maximum of 3 minutes), so I had to go back and refine my ideas in order to get to the main essence of the ideas I was trying to convey. After feedback from peers, I realized that I had crowded some slides and it made it difficult for viewing so I went back to assess what should remain and what could be cut from the final draft, while still maintaining its integrity.

3.)  Explain why this artifact reflects higher level thinking (Bloom’s Taxonomy chart):

This artifact had me: identifying the specific topic area by narrowing it down to a First People’s focus and locating the appropriate sources in journals and finding exemplars, moving from Knowledge to Comprehension. By producing a presentation that would suit my needs, I was working on the Application of my knowledge. By modifying it to suit the presentation length that I had to work within, working on revising and reorganizing content, I was moving from Analysis to Synthesis. As I gave it a final EvaluationI felt proud of my work and felt that I would recommend this as a resource to other Teacher Librarians wishing to extend their knowledge and application of Reconciliation in the LLC.
